Demand for Power in the UK was down by 6 per cent this winter, largely because of the effect of the recession - according to Drax , owner of Europe's biggest coal-fired power station.
Drax invested £100m last year in improving the efficiencies of its turbines and building 'co-firing' capacity so it can burn biomass instead of fuel. By these measures it has already cut carbon emissions by 3% since 2006 - equivalant to 195,000cars off the road.
If you want to steer away from coal generated utiltity companies there are businesses out there that only sell power from renewable resources.
